104 Mobile - Saving lives
When young Sumalatha visited 104 Mobile service point in Boyapally village of
Chittoor district, little did she knew that she was in a high-risk category.
She was brought to the service point for a health check-up on May 14, 2009,
by an accredited social health worker as she was swelling; she lost a baby during her earlier pregnancy.
After the check-up, 104 Mobile Ancillary Nurse Midwife (ANM) diagnosed Sumalatha as a
high-risk case and was in her fifth month of pregnancy.
Illiteracy and ignorance have compounded Sumalatha’s health problems as she
was suffering from stomach and body swelling aided with high blood pressure.
The ANM referred her to the Government hospital in Chittoor and doctors there said
that she should be admitted immediately as she was a high-risk patient, considering her high blood pressure.
Sumalatha and her family members, however, were not willing for the proposal and refused
hospitalisation. It took two days of persuasion for the social activists to bring Sumalatha to terms.
Three days in hospital, her blood pressure was brought to normal and was discharged with clear
instructions of having a medical check-up every week.
Shedding her ignorance with the motivation of 104 Mobile team, Sumalatha adhered to the medical
advice strictly and made it a point to go for weekly health check-up. The local doctors and ASHA workers also played an important role for her transformation.
One month of dedicated hard work of 104 Mobile team, did not go in vain as Sumalatha came off
the high-risk category and was like any normal woman who can deliver a healthy baby.
Well done, 104 Mobile!
